27 December, 2025 – Amritsar : The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided not to hold fireworks on the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh at the Golden Temple tomorrow.
Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, chief manager of the Golden Temple, said the decision had been taken in the wake of the observance of the martyrdom of younger Sahibzadas.
Nevertheless, an akhand path will be performed apart from the display of “Jalau” (show of splendour). The shrine will be illuminated as per the tradition.
Five Sikh high priests recently decided that Parkash Purb would be observed on its already scheduled date, while devotees were given the option to celebrate it on a day before or after, according to their sentiments.
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the Nanakshahi Calendar has once again surfaced. After amendments were made to the calendar in 2010, the Parkash Purb of 10th Sikh master was being observed twice in a single year.
Due to these changes, several gurpurbs are also being marked twice, leading to confusion and debate within the Sikh Panth.
Before 2010, under the original Nanakshahi Calendar, dates of almost all gurpurbs were fixed and Guru Gobind Singh’s Parkash Purb was observed in January every year.
