Gurkirat Singh Manocha, Indian student in Canada, dies after alleged assault

17 March, 2026 – Chandigarh : An Indian student from Ujjain has died in Canada after suffering critical injuries in an alleged assault in Fort St. John, sparking grief and outrage among his family and community.

The victim, Gurkirat Singh Manocha, had moved to Canada around 15 months ago in search of better education and work opportunities.

According to his family, Manocha was attacked late Friday while returning home from work. They allege that he was brutally assaulted by unidentified individuals and subsequently run over, causing severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and local authorities have not yet released full details about the suspects or motive.

Police in Fort St. John are reportedly examining CCTV footage and gathering evidence to piece together the sequence of events.

Manocha’s family in India has called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. They have also urged the Indian government to intervene and ensure justice. His death has raised concerns about the safety of Indian students living abroad, particularly in smaller cities.

The tragic incident has left the local Indian community in shock, with many demanding increased security measures and accountability.
