Rs 5,470-crore development package in Jalandhar, election pitch in focus
17 July, 2026 – Chandigarh : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth Rs 4,736 crore in Chandigarh, aimed at strengthening road connectivity, healthcare and educational infrastructure.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train connecting Jind and Sonepat in Haryana, describing it as a landmark achievement under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and a major step towards clean, sustainable rail transport.
With the launch, India joins a select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered trains. The 89-km route between Jind and Sonepat will be covered in about two hours, with the train stopping at 12 intermediate stations.
Addressing a public gathering in Jind, Modi said the hydrogen train was a symbol of India’s growing technological capabilities. “Today, Indian Railways has taken a major step. This hydrogen train from Jind to Sonepat is the world’s most powerful hydrogen train,” he said.
Referring to the conflict in West Asia, the Prime Minister said India imports large quantities of crude oil, LPG and fertilisers through the Strait of Hormuz, which has remained volatile over the past few months. Despite the global uncertainty, he said, India’s development and railway expansion had continued uninterrupted.
“Had such a situation arisen before 2014, the work of Indian Railways would have come to a complete standstill,” Modi said.
Recalling his association with the region, he said his visit to Jind brought back old memories. “I cannot forget the affection I have received here. Jind’s ghee and ghevar have not changed over the years, but its tevar (attitude) certainly has,” he remarked, adding that the district had become a model of the BJP’s governance.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw termed the launch a historic milestone, saying India had achieved a significant technological breakthrough by developing hydrogen train technology domestically.
“Testing is underway on the Sonepat-Delhi section, and the train will eventually operate up to Delhi,” Vaishnaw said.
The sky blue-and-white train is powered by hydrogen fuel-cell technology, which generates electricity onboard by combining hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as a by-product and resulting in zero carbon emissions. Compared with diesel trains, it significantly reduces noise and dependence on fossil fuels, while eliminating the need for continuous overhead electrification.
India’s hydrogen train comprises 10 coaches and can carry around 2,600 passengers. Equipped with a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system delivering 3,200 horsepower, it is among the world’s longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered passenger trains, showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology for high-capacity, sustainable rail transport.
After this, Modi will visit Jalandhar to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth Rs 5,470 crore and flag off the Amritsar-Varanasi Express from the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment railway station. The visit marks his second trip to Jalandhar in five months, with both visits centred around Dera Sachkhand Ballan, a prominent religious centre for Punjab’s large Ravidassia community.

PM Modi flags off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind
July 17, 2026 11:48 am
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train connecting Jind to Sonipat in Haryana from the railway station here. Designed, engineered and integrated in India using indigenous technology, the hydrogen-powered train showcases the country’s growing capabilities in advanced railway engineering. Styled in a distinctive sky-blue and white colour scheme, the train runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity to power the train. The only by-product of the process is water vapour, resulting in zero carbon emissions during operation. Compared with diesel trains, hydrogen-powered trains eliminate tailpipe emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and imports, and operate with significantly lower noise levels. Unlike conventional electric trains, they do not require continuous overhead electrification, as electricity is generated onboard through hydrogen fuel cells, making them a cleaner and more efficient alternative. The use of green hydrogen also supports India’s transition to sustainable transportation by reducing reliance on electricity generated from fossil fuel-based thermal power plants. India’s hydrogen train features a 10-coach configuration, making it one of the longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains developed globally. Equipped with a 3,200 HP propulsion system, it is also among the most powerful hydrogen-powered trainsets currently in operation. PTI inputs

Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) president Shuvam Sharma Shubi was detained at the Ladowal toll plaza on Friday while on his way to Jalandhar, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station. The Youth Congress had planned a black-flag protest during the Prime Minister’s visit, seeking answers from the Centre over the alleged NEET examination paper leak and recruitment-related issues. According to the Congress, the detention was aimed at preventing party workers from staging a peaceful demonstration. The party alleged that the action was intended to “crush democratic dissent and silence the voice of Punjab’s youth.” The Congress also claimed that the Punjab Police placed Jalandhar Urban District Congress president Angad Dutta and Punjab Youth Congress general secretary Deepak Khosla under house arrest at their respective residences early on Friday, preventing them from participating in or coordinating the protest. In a statement issued after his detention, Shuvam Sharma Shubi alleged that both the Central and Punjab governments had failed to safeguard the interests of students. Referring to the alleged NEET paper leak, he accused the governments of denying accountability and said the Youth Congress would continue to raise the issue. Angad Dutta also alleged that he and Deepak Khosla were confined to their residences, preventing them from coordinating with student groups arriving for the planned protest.
