8 packets recovered from mustard field in Sriganganagar; two accomplices flee under cover of darkness
10 March, 2026 – Abohar : Eight packets of heroin, allegedly dropped by two drones from Pakistan into a mustard field between Chak 43-44 PS under the Sameja Kothi police station area in Sriganganagar, were recovered during a joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF), CID and local police on Monday.
Officials confirmed that a suspect, identified as Simarjit Singh (36), a resident of Bhamba Wattu village in Jalalabad, Fazilka district, was arrested from the field where he had been hiding. Two of his accomplices managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
According to police sources, between 1.30 am and 2.00 am, a farmer watering his field heard a loud thud, as if a heavy object had fallen from above. Soon after, he noticed suspicious movement in a nearby field and immediately alerted BSF personnel stationed at a nearby border post.
Acting swiftly, BSF personnel surrounded the area and launched a search operation. During the operation, a man was apprehended while hiding under the mustard crop.
Eight packets wrapped in yellow plastic sheets and tightly sealed with cellophane tape were recovered from him. The packets contained a total of 6 kg and 400 grams of heroin. The BSF subsequently informed senior officials and handed the arrested suspect over to the police.
During preliminary interrogation, Simarjit Singh reportedly revealed that he and two accomplices had arrived in the Chak 43-44 PS area in a Swift Dzire car from Fazilka. Pakistani smugglers allegedly sent two separate drones, each carrying four packets of heroin, and dropped them inside Indian territory before returning to Pakistan. One of the suspects is said to have relatives in Chak 40-PS village.
Following the recovery, joint teams of the BSF, police and intelligence agencies launched a massive search operation in the surrounding agricultural fields. However, no additional suspicious objects or packages were found.
The two absconding suspects have been identified and raids are underway to locate them. Their homes and possible hideouts are also being searched.
Based on a complaint by a BSF officer, a case has been registered. A blockade was imposed across the area, but the two suspects managed to escape.
Senior BSF and district police officials said that the investigation is ongoing.
