Six ‘angs’ (pages) of the Guru Granth Sahib were found torn at Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Darbar
21 January, 2026 – Jalandhar : An incident of desecration of Shri Guru Granth Sahib has been reported from the Mahal village at Goraya.
Six ‘angs’ (pages) of the Guru Granth Sahib were found torn at Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Darbar. As per eyewitnesses, the pages were found both inside and outside the gurdwara.
The Phillaur police has rounded up a minor boy, found responsible for the incident. The incident took place around 6 pm on Tuesday. As per villagers, who visited the gurdwara at 5 pm on Tuesday, no untoward presence or happening had been reported until then.
However, an hour later, word spread in the village regarding the ‘angs’ of the Guru Granth Sahib found on the gurdwara premises. Representatives of Sikh organisations also gathered outside the gurdwara in protest against the incident.
While the police on Tuesday informed that CCTVs installed by the gurdwara management both inside and outside the gurdwara were non-functional on Tuesday, the arrest of the minor was made by the police after verifying independent footage from outside the gurdwara.
The police also said the incident could also be related to an ongoing dispute between two factions regarding heading the gurdwara management.
DSP, Phillaur Bharat Masih said, “Three angs of Guru Granth Sahib were found scattered at the gurdwara. As per CCTV footage retrieved from outside the gurdwara, a 16-year-old boy was found dropping pages of the Guru Granth Sahib outside the gurdwara premises. The youth is a resident of the same village and a Class X student. A detailed investigation is on to ascertain the cause of his actions. A dispute regarding heading the gurdwara management was also under way at the village. All these aspects are under investigation. ”
