18-year-old from Ludhiana has emerged as one of state’s finest karate stars, bagged multiple medals

03 April, 2026 – Ludhiana : From stepping on the karate mat at an age of just over four to winning medals on the national stage, 18-year-old Vanshika Yadav from the city has carved an inspiring journey of grit, discipline and excellence to emerge as one of state’s brightest young stars.

Vanshika’s rise reflects years of dedication and unwavering support from her family. She is a student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar. Her father, Pramod Kumar Yadav, an advocate, and mother, Rama, have been pillars of strength throughout her journey.

She recently ended her school life on a strong note with a bronze medal at the 69th National School Games in Baramati, Maharashtra.

During 68th National School Games in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, she bagged a gold medal in under-19 kumite (64kg).

“We always believed in her dreams and supported her. Today, seeing her bring laurels to the state and the country is a matter of pride for our family,” said her father.

Vanshika’s tryst with karate began in December 2012 at The Great School of Martial Arts, BRS Nagar, under the guidance of coach Gaurav Sachdeva.

Her talent was evident early as she clinched a gold medal in her very first tournament, setting the tone for an extraordinary career that continues to head towards greater glory.

Coach Sachdeva said Vanshika showed exceptional dedication from a very young age. Her discipline and hunger to improve make her a standout among her peers.

“From a young girl with a dream to a national medal-winning player, Vanshika’s journey is a proof that dedication, discipline and determination can turn ambition into achievement,” he said.

By the age of six, Vanshika had already stepped into competitive karate. In 2017, she earned her Black Belt (1st Dan), a major milestone for any karate player. In the same year, she represented India in Japan at the Itabashi Ward Asuzawa Stadium, Tokyo. Vanshika followed it with another international appearance in 2018. She was selected for a competition in Japan, an achievement few athletes accomplish at such a young age.

Vanshika’s breakthrough came at the state level in 2018, when she made a strong mark at her first official championship. She bagged a gold medal in kata and a silver medal in kumite event, earning her a place in the state team for national championships. A streak of consistent performances followed as Vanshika represented the state at multiple national events over the years.

Her national journey gained momentum in 2019, when she was selected for the National School Games in Jabalpur. During the Covid pandemic, when sporting activities came to a halt, Vanshika continued to train relentlessly at home — securing first place in an All India Online Kata Tournament.

The state government honoured Vanshika on Independence Day in 2021, recognising her sustained efforts.

Vanshika’s career soared to new heights when she won a silver medal (under-17 kumite – 64kg) at the National School Games at Chhatrasal Stadium, New Delhi, in 2023.

She was honoured by the district administration during Republic Day celebrations in 2024. In the same year, she secured a bronze medal at the national level in 66kg category of junior kumite. Vanshika became the first karate player from the state to receive the Sports Karate Gradation with a B grade certificate.

With multiple national medals, international exposure and a strong foundation, Vanshika is seen as a contender for international championships. Sports observers believe that with continued support and opportunities, she has the potential to represent the country at the highest level.
