Punjab police seized 464kg Heroin in 2019, which is four times more when compared to the quantity recovered in 2016.
The state force also forfeited property worth RS 24 crore of drug smugglers in 2019, against property worth Rs 12 crore forfeited in 2018. At the same time, the police arrested 180 smugglers last year from whom over 2 kg heroin was seized. Data released by the state government showed that drug deaths fell from 114 in 2018 to 47 in 2019.
Also to curb the state’s VIP culture, police withdrew over 1,700 gunmen and cops from security duty. this led to an addition of almost three battalions to the police force for law and order duties without any cost. ASI withdrawn from security and other non-essential duties have been posted in police stations to improve investigations. The police also got over 20,000 CCTV cameras installed across the state as part of its ‘CCTV Cameras Mission Mode Project’.
Continuing its ‘Back to Police Stations Campaign’, the state force deployed over 7,000 cops of various ranks in police stations. Also. 906 gangsters were arrested or neutralised, and 562 weapons and 223 vehicles seized, during 2019. One of them, Ankit Bhadu, who had around 21 criminal cases of attempt to murder, carjacking, extortion and dacoity registered against him in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan was neutralised in Zirakpur, Mohali, on February 7 last year.
Police also found two drones near the Indo-Pak border, which were being launched from across the border from Pakistan to drop drugs and ammunition in Punjab.
