25 September, 2025 – Chandigarh : A 29-year-old Indian-origin man, Varun Suresh, has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of 71-year-old David Brimmer, a registered sex offender, in what authorities describe as a targeted and premeditated attack.
According to Fremont police, officers responded to reports of a stabbing around noon on September 18 in the 600 block of Upper Vintners Circle. Brimmer was suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite emergency aid, he was pronounced dead. Suresh was taken into custody at the location without incident and a knife was recovered from him.
Investigators say Suresh used California’s Megan’s Law website—a publicly accessible sex offender registry—to locate Brimmer, who had previously served nine years in prison following a 1995 conviction for child sexual assault, the Independent reported.
Authorities confirmed that Suresh and Brimmer had no prior relationship.
Court documents reveal that Suresh admitted to planning the attack, telling police he had long desired to kill a sex offender.
He allegedly described his actions as justified, saying sex offenders “hurt children” and “deserve to die.” He also reportedly stated that the killing was “honestly really fun” and expressed no remorse during post-arrest interviews.
On the day of the incident, Suresh allegedly posed as a door-to-door accountant seeking clients, carrying a notebook, bag, and coffee to appear professional. After confirming Brimmer’s identity, Suresh reportedly told him, “I knew I had the right guy”.
When Brimmer attempted to flee, Suresh chased him for two blocks before catching him in a neighbour’s garage and kitchen. There, Suresh allegedly stabbed Brimmer in the neck and slit his throat.
Authorities found screenshots of multiple profiles from the Megan’s Law site on Suresh’s phone, including Brimmer’s. Notably, the screenshot of Brimmer’s profile was timestamped less than an hour before the first 911 call.
Prosecutors have charged Suresh with murder, residential burglary, and use of a deadly weapon. He remains in custody without bail as the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office continues its investigation. Officials have categorized the attack as an isolated incident, noting that there is no broader threat to the community.
This is not Suresh’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2021, he was arrested for making a false bomb threat and criminal threats after leaving a suspicious package at a Fremont hotel. At the time, he reportedly claimed he believed the CEO of Hyatt Hotels was a pedophile and said he had been “hunting” him.
The case raises complex legal and ethical questions surrounding vigilantism and the use of public offender databases. If convicted, Suresh could face life imprisonment.
