Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chaava, which profiles the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, has become highest grossing Indian film in 2025
The Parliament will hold a special screening of Vicky Kaushal-starrer ‘Chaava’ on Thursday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent leaders of the ruling BJP expected to attend.
Chaava, which profiles the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, and his execution at the hands of the sixth Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, has become the highest grossing Indian film in 2025.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had referenced ‘Chaava’ last week while discussing the factors that triggered the Nagpur riots on Monday, which resulted in significant property damage.
The riots occurred on the same day when VHP and Bajrang Dal organised a protest in Nagpur, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Sambhaji Nagar, formerly known as Aurangabad after Aurangzeb.
Fadnavis stated that the film had stirred strong emotions and fueled widespread demands to remove Aurangzeb’s grave. Several right-wing organisations have joined the call, insisting that the glorification of Aurangzeb must come to an end.
BJP’s parent body, the RSS, has also cautioned against turning “invaders like Aurangzeb into icons” and urged people to “choose their icons wisely.”
