Iqbal Singh Lalpura
As I reflect on the wise words of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, I am reminded of the profound importance of living by our own advice. Guru Nanak’s words echo in my mind: “Abar updeshe AAP na kate, abat Jabat janme marae” – If you preach to others and don’t follow yourself, you are bound to live in the cycle of death and birth.
In our daily lives, we often find ourselves offering guidance to others, hoping to steer them towards a better path. However, how often do we take our own counsel? Accepting and implementing our own advice can be the turning point in achieving success in our lives.
The Irony of Advice-Giving
We’ve all been there – sharing words of wisdom with friends, family, or colleagues, only to forget to apply them to our own lives. This disparity between our words and actions can hinder our personal growth and progress. As the wise saying goes: “Auran ok yupdeste mukh meh parh he ret, Ras bighani rakhte Khaia ghar ka khet” – If you preach to others, you will have sand in your mouth, and by taking others’ money, you will lose your own.
The Power of Self-Reflection
Before offering advice, let’s take a step back and ask ourselves:
- Am I practicing what I preach?
- Do I embody the values I’m promoting?
- Can I genuinely say I’m living the advice I’m giving?
Inculcating our Own Advice
By embracing our own guidance, we:
- Build credibility and integrity
- Develop self-awareness and accountability
- Set a positive example for others
- Foster personal growth and self-improvement
- Enhance our relationships through authenticity
Success Through Self-Application
Imagine the transformative power of living by our own advice. We would:
- Make better decisions, aligned with our values
- Cultivate resilience and perseverance
- Nurture meaningful relationships built on trust
- Achieve goals, fueled by self-discipline and motivation
- Inspire others through our genuine example
The Real Way: Truthful Living
As Sri Guru Granth Sahib reminds us: “The real way is Sachon Ure sab ko upar such Sachar” – Truth is higher than everything, but still higher is truthful living.
A Call to Action
Let’s bridge the gap between our words and actions. Before offering advice, let’s:
- Reflect on our own behaviors and habits
- Ensure we’re practicing what we preach
- Continuously self-improve and grow
By embracing this mindset, we’ll unlock the true potential of our advice, leading to a more authentic, successful, and fulfilling life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, practicing what we preach is the key to success. Let’s not forget the wisdom of our ancestors and the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. By living by our own advice, we’ll become the change we wish to see in others.
