Guru Nanak’s words of Wisdom: A guide to lasting fulfilment

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, we often find ourselves torn between two conflicting desires: the need for success and the quest for satisfaction. While success is often measured by external factors, satisfaction is a deeply personal and internal experience. Let us explore the importance of prioritizing satisfaction over success and the role of perspective in achieving a more fulfilling life, as guided by the timeless wisdom of Guru Nanak.

When faced with a difficult situation or person, we are often advised to take a step back and re-evaluate our approach. This is where the wisdom of the age-old adage comes in: “If anything about a person feels bad, think in two ways. If the person is important, then forget the thing. If the thing is important, then forget the person.” This simple yet profound advice encourages us to reassess our priorities and focus on what truly matters. We should avoid unnecessary conflict and accept it as the will of God.

In many cases, we find ourselves investing time and energy into relationships or situations that leave us feeling drained and unfulfilled. This is often because we are prioritizing the person or situation over our own well-being. By recognizing the importance of forgetting the person or thing that is causing us harm, we can begin to break free from toxic patterns and cultivate a more positive and empowering mind set. The fault lies with us for having failed to identify the person and their capabilities.

But what about success? Is it not the ultimate goal we strive for? The answer lies in understanding that success is often measured by external factors, such as wealth, status, or recognition – that too, by others. While these achievements may bring temporary happiness, they rarely lead to long-term satisfaction. In fact, research has shown that once basic needs are met, additional wealth and material possessions do little to increase happiness. Contentment is the pillar of Guru Nanak’s wisdom.

On the other hand, satisfaction is a deeply personal and internal experience. It is measured by our own soul, mind, and heart. When we prioritize satisfaction over success, we begin to focus on what truly brings us joy and fulfilment. This may mean pursuing a passion project, nurturing meaningful relationships, or simply taking time to appreciate the beauty in life. Anand, a mental state of bliss, comes from following the path of Guru.

Life is like the touch-me-not flower; the moment you grasp it, its beauty and charm fade away. Similarly, worldly pleasures – be it food, clothes, wealth, material possessions, or even intimate relationships – lose their allure once we become too attached. The more we indulge, the emptier we feel. This paradox of pleasure is a fundamental aspect of human experience, leading to sickness.

Guru Nanak’s wisdom teaches us that true satisfaction lies not in external sources but in cultivating a happy conscience. This is achieved through selfless service to humanity and meditation on the divine. By focusing on the inner world, we find lasting peace and contentment. The Gurus’ teachings emphasize the importance of living a life of purpose, guided by values of compassion, humility, and self-discipline.

The transient nature of worldly pleasures is a stark reminder that everything we see, touch, and feel is impermanent. Guru Nanak reminds us that everything will perish, except the divine spark within us. This eternal essence is not bound by physical senses; it can only be experienced through devotion and self-reflection. As we navigate life’s journey, we must distinguish between the fleeting and the eternal.

Embracing this wisdom, we can live an honorable life, giving respect to others without compromising our values. By letting go of attachment to fleeting pleasures, we create space for meaningful connections, personal growth, and spiritual evolution. We learn to appreciate the beauty of life without becoming entangled in its impermanence.

In the words of Guru Nanak, “The ultimate goal is to realize the divine within, and to live a life that is in harmony with the universe.” May we embody this wisdom, finding joy in the journey, and peace in the present moment. As we walk this path, we discover that true happiness lies not in external sources but in the depths of our own soul.

By embracing Guru Nanak’s teachings, we can transform our lives and find lasting fulfilment. We learn to cherish the beauty of life without becoming attached to its impermanence. In the end, it is not what we accumulate or achieve that brings us happiness, but the love, compassion, and wisdom we cultivate along the way.

As we strive to build a more harmonious and inclusive society, let us draw inspiration from Guru Nanak’s wisdom. May his teachings guide us towards a life of purpose, compassion and fulfilment.
