The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Punjab, has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his statesman-like gesture of repealing the three Farm Laws.
“Modi JI holds the pulse of the masses and is very concerned about of the well being of farmers. He also has a very close and special relationship with Punjab and its people. He took the dynamic decision to repeal the Farm laws to ensure that the farmers who are sitting on agitation do not suffer any more. The BJP government, under Modi Ji, has exhibited the highest tenets of democracy by bowing to the will of the people,” said Ashwani Sharma, President of BJP, Punjab.
“It is expected that the Farm Union leaders will now stand up to the promise that they made of olling up the agitation and going back home once the laws are repealed,” Sharma added.
Some segments of the Farm Union leaders are raising legal guarantee of MSP and other minor matters as a reason to continue with the agitation. Prime Minsiter Modi has already declared that a committee comprising representatives of Farm Unions, all states, centre and experts in the field of Agriculture will be convened to look into the matter of MSP in a holistic manner. Changes in the existing structure will be considered on the basis of the recommendations of the committee.
The BJP has urged the farmers to place their faith and trust in their prime minsiter and go back home while the matter of MSP and other minor issues are being resolved in a collective manner.
The BJP has also urged the Government of Punjab to now look into the pending issues and problems of the farming community in view of the fact that Agriculture is a state subject and the central Farm Laws now stand repealed.
The beginning should be made by waiver of loans to all farmers of Punjab as was promised by the ruling Congress party during the 2017 Assembly elections. The BJP has urged an immediate waiver for which a sum of Rs.90,000 crore needs to be dispensed from the state exchequer. In case the amount is not available, the party should generate the necessary funds internally to make good the promise.
The BJP has also urged the state Government to come up with a holistic policy for MSP for all agricultural products since it falls within the purview of the state, pending the changes that would be made centrally on the basis of the recommendation made by the committee being convened by the centre.
The State Government also needs to come up with a policy to curtail the Wheat-Rice cycle that is causing terrible damage to the soil and environment of Punjab. In this, advise of Punjab Agriculture University and experts of the state in the field of Agriculture and environment issues should to be taken.
